    The only medieval attestations of the term gualdrapa occur in Alfonso Álvarez de Villasandino's poem «Mi señor Adelantado» (ID1252), dated to the early years of the 15th century, and in Martin Anes Marinho's cantiga «Ena primeira rua que cheguemos» (B 1621 / V 1154), which could have been composed at the end of the 13th century, or in the first decades of the 14th. These two poetic texts are also related in terms of argument and rhetoric. However, in Villasandino, gualdrapa has been interpreted as a kind of pants, and not as a covering for a horse or mule, despite the fact that the latter meaning seems to be correct in that text. Contrarywise, in his pieces «Noble Rey, yo adorando» (ID 1201), «Todos los discretos perder deben risa» (ID 1227) and «A vos, poderoso señor, sin infinta» (ID 1295), the context strongly suggests that the term as used in these Cancionero de Baena texts denotes a garment, although not necessarily the pants of the time. It is worth nothing that galdrapa is always copied here, while in «Mi señor Adelantado», PN1 has gualdrapa, a variant that is not merely graphemic but meaningful. The editors of the Alfonso X's cantiga «Se me graça fezesse este Papa de Roma» (B 463) have interpreted the reading of cancioneiro galdrara, which appears in the fourth verse as galdrapa, understood here also as a graphic variant of gualdrapa, but in this case denoting a horse covering. In this article, we look at the terms gualdrapa and galdrapa, the different interpretations and editions of these terms in the aforementioned works. We also consider the possible lexical influence of the two Galician-Portuguese cantigas on Villasandino's texts by means of these terms.
