Consciousness has traditionally been considered by philosophy as one of its main objects of study. It was conceived as something that could not been explained in biochemical, biophysical or anatomical terms alone. The mental world had an autonomy of its own and exercised control over the material or cerebral world. But, little by little, the problem of consciousness loses the sense of mystery it has historically had and it is studied from the point of view of different disciplines (psychology, artificial intelligence, neuroscience, evolution theory ,etc), which are contributing to its clarification. We analyse the extreme positions supported in relation to this subject matter and ranging from naturalism (with its different kinds of materialism, functionalism, behaviourism.etc.) and mentalism, for which the mental factor appears as the subjective dimension, individual and private consciousness, irreducible to its mental structure. But not only does the problem of consciousness result controversial, but, even more, if possible, the factor of self-consciousness as well, with the additional problems of introspection and reflection. In spite of this, neuroscientific researchers are trying to explain the vast system of interconnected cerebral cells which, in the living creatures, seem to be responsible for the complex activities of conscious and selfconscious intelligence.
