In the eighteenth century, the outstanding contribution made by Timoteo OScanlan, an Irish doctor, to the Spanish scientific development and cultural evolution has been recognised by a number of scientific works in which he provides evidence of the significant impact of smallpox inoculation on the Spanish society. This medical treatment had a noticeable effect on smallpox, which had a high mortality rate at that time. The empirical data drawn from his studies show that this medical practice lead to social improvement, which resulted in positive health outcomes for the population. In 1771, when OScanlan was working as a doctor at the Royal Hospital of Ferrol, where he started a family, he decided to introduce inoculation in town as smallpox had reached epidemic levels and was having a devastating effect on the inhabitants.
