                            [a] => ABSTRACT: This paper examines critically some of the ideas related to children's literature, in particular the one that considers that one of the main functions of the children's books is to transmit values. The relationship between literature and ethics are also discussed in order to show the potential of literature, including the children's literature, to talk about life and human beings in great depth. Against consideration of the children's books as instruments to entertain or instruct, this paper argues the importance of an ethical reading and the possibility of those books to generate moral reasoning. Certain pedagogical practices that underestimate the quality of children's literature and its power to promote ethical responses and the construction of knowledge through dialogue and listening are also discussed.
