The most frequently depicted historical events in the cinema about the Byzantine Empire are that of the reign of Justinian and his wife Theodora, in addition to the tragic fall of Constantinople in 1453. Compared to the large amount of Roman films and movies that draw their inspiration from Greek mythology, at first glance, one might think that the Byzantine millennium is not interesting as a film plot. Nevertheless, we have a less known filmography, originating from Greece and Turkey mainly, which depicts other periods and recreates the biography of historical figures of great significance. This article will discuss the image of Byzantium through its different cinematographic and television interpretations, ranging from silent films to the latest TV series.
