Mastering literacy skills leads to the construction of structures for dialogue, the recognition of diversity, autonomy and citizen action, a characteristic that is learned and exercised throughout life. Based on an investigation of the results of a program to promote applied reading in public schools on the periphery of the Metropolitan Area of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, literacy projects are proposed as cultural mediation artifacts for citizen training from childhood. From a sociocultural perspective, within the framework of ideological literacy and on the basis of Project-Based Learning (PBL), Literacy Projects are an opportunity to significantly articulate literacy experiences together with the daily life of the community. Nine features stand out when putting into practice literacy projects when used for citizen education: shared concern, conversation, questions, diversity, affective security, creativity, non-obligatory nature, the process as a product and orientation defined towards the community.
