The article studies the character of the "gracioso" Batín in El castigo sin venganza by Lope de Vega, as a mirror and inner voice of his master Federico. It argues that Batín is a virtuous and moral servant, which does not fit the stereotypes of the Golden Age comedy. This servant is compared to Juanete in El pintor de su deshonra by Calderón de la Barca, since both reflect and comment on the morals behind the actions. In both cases, the servants introduce moralizing stories that reflect and reveal important aspects of the action. The article shows that, by the end of Lope's tragedy, Batín leaves his master Federico, after this, one commits adultery with his stepmother Cassandra, because he cannot continue reflecting his master's soul. Different from Batín, Juanete remains faithful to his master Juan de Roca. Juanete's loyalty shows him more as a commentator on the action for the public than as a real example of moral and virtuous soul
