Following the Cognitive Theory of Figurative Language (Dobrovol'skij and Piirainen 2005), from a cultural and historical perspective, this article analyzes the symbolic background of the willow in Chinese culture, and its semiotics in the figurative expressions, idioms and proverbs. This plant carries a specific semiotic value in the Chinese culture, reflecting social aesthetic criteria, moral norms, beliefs, customs, etc. For Chinese people, the willow is associated with feminine beauty, the season of spring, love, homeland, sincerity, etc. On the other hand, the willow also carries negative cultural connotations, for example, the willow may represent frivolity, megalomania, and is also related with prostitution, sadness, etc.
