The purpose of this essay is to study the evolution of the image of Numancia as a city under siege in Spanish drama, with Cervantes' Numancia as its starting point. To that end we have chosen a series of works in which is depicted the city of Numancia during the Roman siege, and by making a comparative study, and have come to the conclusion that Cervantes' tragedy constitutes a dramatic model which to the present day continues to inspire authors and the theatrical community. It is to be supposed that the similarities between the work by Cervantes and those by dramatists such as Rojas Zorrilla and López de Ayala are due to their having used the same Roman and later sources; however, our analysis confirms that what the fruit of Cervantes' invention, in other words the shocking scenes of life inside the besieged city, has its obvious equivalents in the works of those authors mentioned. In the twentieth century, on the other hand, the text of Cervantes' drama is openly used, creating adaptations and up-to-date versions, like those of Alberti and Sastre or, by using techniques of re-writing, new dramatic texts, original and independent in themselves, but which nevertheless maintain an intertextual dialogue with Cervantes' tragedy; an example of such a process is La ciudad sitiada by Laila Ripoll
